After leading the organization for 10 years and working there for more than 25 years, Kevin O’Connor retired as Executive Director of Joseph’s House and Shelter March 31st, Kevin has been a thought leader in the supportive housing world -- speaking and teaching locally and nationally about housing first and harm reduction, including at many Network conferences, and at Siena College.

HUD Announces Continuum of Care Awards

On March 28th, HUD announced the Continuum of Care awards for the FY 2022 competition, totaling $2.8 billion nationally.  In New York State, 23 CoCs received $268 million, a 3% increase over the prior year.  NYC won $145 million, a 2% increase.  Most of the funding supports existing permanent supportive housing rental assistance programs, so the funding increases largely support increased Fair Market Rents.  Congrats to all CoCs and funded programs.  Please contact spiasecki@shnny.org with details about this funding, as we gear up for another federal budget year.

The Network Hosts a Briefing on Mayor Adams’ City of Yes Housing Opportunity Proposal

On Thursday, March 23rd the Network was joined by the New York City Department of City Planning (DCP) for a briefing on the Mayor’s City of Yes Housing Opportunity Proposal. DCP presented key strategies and recommendations identified in the proposal aiming to further fair housing and simplify restrictive zoning, including those specific to expanding opportunities for affordable and supportive housing. There was then an extensive Q&A session with attendees.

On March 21st the Network joined the Correct Crisis Intervention Today - New York City (CCIT-NYC) coalition for a Peers Not Police rally urging New York City Council to fully fund the CCIT-NYC crisis response model and not the City’s current B-HEARD pilot program, in which well over 80% of calls are being responded to by police.
