Congress Approves HUD Funding Increases

The House and Senate have agreed on across-the-board funding increases for the HUD programs that are key to supportive housing. It is expected that the President will sign the bill, avoiding a government shutdown. This represents an incremental increase keeping the programs whole, not a major new investment.

2019 Tenant of the Year Breakfast

Tenants who’d been nominated as 2019 Supportive Housing Tenants of the Year gathered with the caseworkers who’d nominated them for the Network’s annual Award Breakfast December 3rd, which was held at HELP USA’s Genesis Residence.

National Grid and Gov. Cuomo Lift Gas Service Moratorium

The Network is happy to pass along the following information: the National Grid moratorium – which curtailed gas service for thousands of customers in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, including more than 600 units of supportive housing – has ended.

Network Hosts HCR and Legal Aid Society For Session on Recent Rent Law Reforms

This past month, the Network held a convening for NYC scattered site providers to learn about how the recently passed rent law reforms will impact nonprofit providers and tenants living in scattered site apartments.

Concern for Independent Living Opens Surf Vets Place in Coney Island

On the gorgeous, breezy morning of Nov. 20th, a crowd of supporters gathered near the Coney Island shoreline to celebrate Concern for Independent Living and Georgica Green Venture’s opening of Surf Vets Place. State and city elected officials, community board members, funding partners and other Concern staff sat in a bright community room to applaud the beautiful new apartment building, which includes 82 supportive units for formerly homeless veterans.
“This is the most beautiful affordable development in all of Coney Island!” said Council Member Mark Treyger representing District 47. He emphasized that the ribbon-cutting was not simply for a building, “but for the dignity and respect that is owed to our veterans.” He ended his remarks by saying “This is a game-changer for the Coney Island community.”
