I have been a Case Manager at Urban Pathways since July and have worked in the human services sector for the past 4 years. 

Urban Pathways provides homeless services and supportive housing, and our programs have never closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides dealing with COVID itself, the pandemic has created other huge challenges for my clients experiencing homelessness. They face restrictions making appointments, having to wait for months at a time to be seen, and challenges getting paperwork updated that is needed to apply for housing. This has resulted in my colleagues and I doing double the work to ensure our clients get what they need for housing.

On October 27th, Executive Director Laura Mascuch provided the Network’s testimony at the New York State Assembly’s Standing Committee on Housing’s public hearing.  Assembly Members sought input from the affordable housing community on this past year’s progress on the existing five year housing plan and what elements should be included in a new five year affordable housing plan envisioned as part of next year’s state budget.

HSC launches #JustPay Campaign

The Human Services Council launched the #JustPay Campaign, dedicated to “fighting to end government-sanctioned poverty wages for human services workers”. The campaign launched on Monday, October 25th with a week of action targeting the Mayor’s office, City Council, the Governor and incoming City Council members. Currently, the campaign is urging the City to include a 3% COLA in the November Budget Modification.

On October 28th, President Biden announced the framework for the Build Back Better Act, which includes the largest one-time investment in affordable housing in our nation’s history. We are happy to report that our top priorities are included, with $20 billion for new rental assistance and $15 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund.  While the Build Back Better Act must still be passed in both the House and Senate, this is definitely a positive step and the result of all of your advocacy these last months. Thank you, and let’s all keep advocating until the Build Back Better Act is passed!
