The Network Testifies at NYS Joint Assembly and Senate Budget Hearing on Human Services

On February 13th, Network Upstate Coordinator Stephen Piasecki testified at a hearing of the New York State Joint Assembly and Senate Budget Hearing on Human Services, urging the state to increase funding for the New York State Supportive Housing Program (NYSSHP) and to create a flexible Preservation Fund for existing supportive housing in the final State Budget.

On February 23rd, the Network’s Associate Director of Engagement and Communications Joelle Ballam-Schwan delivered testimony to the New York City Council’s Housing & Buildings Committee in support of two proposed pieces of legislation: Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (Intro 196) and Public Land for Public Good (Intro 637), and spoke to how they would help further the production and expansion of supportive housing in New York City.

During Black History Month we acknowledge and celebrate the leaders, activists, and change makers who continue to inspire the work we do. In 2021, New Paltz Students declared November 26th Sojourner Truth Day in Ulster County. Youth leaders at the YMCA Youth Crew in Kingston, Briana Gary and Anayathsyn Castiillo, have been working for over a year to commemorate a day of remembrance for abolitionist and suffragist Sojourner Truth who was born in Kingston, New York in 1797.

Governor Hochul’s budget proposal continues New York’s historic investment in expanding supportive housing statewide, recognizing that the combination of on-site services with affordable housing is a powerful and proven approach to combatting chronic homelessness.
Governor Hochul Releases SFY 2024 Budget

The Governor released the SFY 2024 $221.6 billion Executive Budget yesterday. It continues the state's full commitment to the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative, a 15-year plan to develop 20,000 units of supportive housing. The budget also advances funding for year two of the five-year affordable housing plan to create and preserve 100,000 affordable homes.
