On July 29th, the Network joined the Office of Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) to celebrate the announcement of back-to-back record-breaking numbers for supportive housing units developed and preserved in a single year, at Services for the UnderServed's new affordable and supportive residence, Melrose North. This year alone, the City created a record 1,500 new supportive housing homes and preserved an additional 649.
Mayor Eric Adams said, “We are proud to announce another record-breaking year for housing in New York City. In FY 2024 we produced combined record of 28,944 units of affordable and public housing. These record-breaking years are the result of countless city agencies coming together to make sure all New Yorkers — from our formerly homeless to families at the edge of poverty to those just struggling to make ends meet — have access to safe, stable housing.”
First Deputy Mayor Torres Springer said, “In the last fiscal year, over one fifth of homes financed by HPD will serve people earning 0-30% AMI. Along with highest lottery and homeless placements on record, we also increased the number of homeless households getting into HPD financed developments by 57%.”
HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrión said, “We are in a supportive housing building now, Melrose North, built by Bronx Pro Group and service provider S:US. 103 apartments for formerly homeless folks by the NYC 15/15 program. We continue to insert NYC 15/15 in every project where we can. These are the folks we work with and It requires that kind of partnership over the five boroughs to make that happen.”
Network Board Chair and Breaking Ground President and CEO Brenda Rosen, said, "We are thrilled to celebrate a great milestone for New York City with an historic number of supportive housing apartments – over 2,100 – the most on-record in a single year produced for our City's most vulnerable."
New York City Councilmember Rafael Salamanca, Jr, chair, Committee on Land Use, New York State Assembly member Jenifer Rajkumar and Gita Walker, affordable housing resident, also spoke.
