In July 1990, President George Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law which, for the first time, provided comprehensive civil rights to people with disabilities. Twenty-five years later, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared July Disability Pride Month to commemorate this significant legislation. This month serves as a time to honor the uniqueness and diversity of the disability community, challenging the stigma this community faces.
July is also BIPOC Mental Health Month, in honor of which we would like to share NAMI’s Health Equity and Mental Health Series. These learning community sessions provide viewers with tools to understand how to manage biases while working with diverse families, how culture influences communication and much more.
In June, the Network also celebrated Caribbean American Heritage Month with member spotlights on social media. We spotlighted leaders in the supportive housing community, Alexandra Francis, Chief Program Officer at Lantern Community Services, Yvette Brisset-Andre, Executive Director at Unique Peoples Services, and Dr. Junior Dillion, President and CEO at Volunteers of America Upstate New York.
