Community Access Breaks Ground on River Avenue

On a rainy October 29th, elected officials and funding and development partners joined Community Access for the groundbreaking of 1159 River Avenue. The residence will have 245 affordable and supportive units - 148 supportive - for individuals living with mental health concerns, individuals and families with histories of homelessness, and low income families.

Concern for Independent Living Opens Surf Vets Place in Coney Island

On the gorgeous, breezy morning of Nov. 20th, a crowd of supporters gathered near the Coney Island shoreline to celebrate Concern for Independent Living and Georgica Green Venture’s opening of Surf Vets Place. State and city elected officials, community board members, funding partners and other Concern staff sat in a bright community room to applaud the beautiful new apartment building, which includes 82 supportive units for formerly homeless veterans.

“This is the most beautiful affordable development in all of Coney Island!” said Council Member Mark Treyger representing District 47. He emphasized that the ribbon-cutting was not simply for a building, “but for the dignity and respect that is owed to our veterans.” He ended his remarks by saying “This is a game-changer for the Coney Island community.”

Gov. Cuomo Announces Conditional Awards of ESSHI Round Four

On November 18th, Governor Cuomo announced the fourth round of conditional awards for the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI). The awards went to 108 nonprofit agencies totaling 161 projects across the state. Seventy-five percent of the recipients are members of the Supportive Housing Network of NY.

Community Access Opens East 172nd Street Apartments

On November 12th, Community Access gathered a collaborative of government funders, elected officials, tenants, and building and program staff to celebrate the opening of the East 172nd Street Apartments. The building includes 65 affordable two-bedroom and studio apartments and 60 studio supportive housing units reserved for tenants living with mental health concerns.

New Destiny Welcomes Residents to The Jennings in the Bronx

On Nov. 6, New Destiny gathered alongside supporters in government, funding, and the community to celebrate a beautiful new affordable/supportive residence in the Bronx. Thanks to The Jennings, Crotona Park East neighborhood of the Bronx gains 42 affordable units, including 23 set aside for homeless domestic violence survivors who will receive onsite supportive services from the nonprofit.

Breaking Ground and Comunilife Open Supportive Housing at La Central

On the morning of Oct. 29th, local and state government representatives, funding and development partners, and community members gathered in the Bronx for Breaking Ground and Comunilife’s ribbon-cutting at the transformational La Central development. The partners opened a 161-unit affordable/supportive housing residence, which includes 97 supportive units specifically for individuals who are formerly homeless and/or living with HIV/AIDS.

Services for the UnderServed and Bronx Pro Group Partner for Jerome Avenue Apartments

On the brisk morning of October 25th, state and local elected officials, funding partners, and community members joined Services for the UnderServed (S:US) and Bronx Pro Group to herald construction for Jerome Ave. Apartments. It is the first housing groundbreaking within the Jerome Avenue Neighborhood Plan, an initiative to revitalize the Jerome Avenue corridor. Out of a total 175 affordable units, 105 will also be supportive units for formerly homeless individuals and families.

The project will be a “radical transformation and improvement of this site,” according to Arlo Chase, Senior Vice President of Real Estate & Property Development at S:US, who kicked off the event’s program. He explained the site’s history: S:US took over a neighborhood eyesore – colorfully referred to as a “hot sheets motel” – and turned it into Jerome Court, housing for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, at a time when such support was still uncommon. He said  Jerome Ave. Apartments would expand on that honorable legacy.
