On a steamy July 17th (98 degrees!) supporters, staff, elected officials, and partners gathered in front of Summit on Hudson’s green wall to celebrate the opening of its new six story complex atop Locust Hill in Yonkers. The 113-apartment complex provides affordable housing to families and individuals as well as formerly homeless households including individuals struggling with mental health concerns and young adult families. Support services are provided by Westhab and funded by New York State’s Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative through the Office of Mental Health.
Westhab CEO Richard Nightingale emceed the event noting that amidst New York’s housing crisis, Yonkers is doing something about it. Standing in front of the living green wall, he pointed out that the entire theme of the building is sustainability including its Eco Lounge showcasing all the building’s sustainable features with touchscreen videos explaining each.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano spoke next and marveled at all the amenities in the building remarking how long he and Rich had talked about rooftop amenities and delighting in Summit’s rooftop Skybox. He echoed Rich’s comments saying “Yonkers is leading by example in building good quality affordable housing.”
Westchester County Executive George Latimer noted the great city/county/state partnership on display with Summit, ending with “Let’s keep doing these things.”
NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins began her remarks by saying “We’re all kvelling!” about Summit on Hudson. She noted that “budget documents are a reflection of what we believe in” and that Summit’s funding, including its focus on both affordable housing and sustainability is a great example of the state’s priorities.
HCR Commissioner RuthAnne Visnaukas spoke next: We’re here to acknowledge and celebrate how much work it takes to build buildings like this” also noting that she was sorely tempted to dip her toes in the fountain in the courtyard.
NYSERDA Director of Multifamily Residential Housing Will Xia thanked everyone involved and said how much he’d like to replicate Summit on Hudson.
Tenant Chartiana Fisher was the final and most moving speaker. 20 years old and turning 21 the next day, she said “living in this beautiful building pushes me to do more” for herself and her two children. She shouted out the team of Westhab case managers: “I love you guys.”
At the end of the event, Andrew Germansky, Westhab Senior Vice President of Real Estate gave out awards to the more than 20 partners who helped make Summit on Hudson a reality, including project partners Amie Gross Architects, Lasberg Construction Associates, and Bright Power, and financing partners Enterprise Community Partners, TD Bank, and the Leviticus Fund.
Amenities at the fully-electric Summit on Hudson include the aforementioned Eco Lounge, the rooftop Skybox, the courtyard fountain, and EV car charging stations. The building received a NYSERDA Buildings of Excellence award for sustainable design.
The building was designed by Amie Gross Architects, built by Lasberg Construction Associates. Bright Power was the Environmental Consultant.
