On June 13th, DePaul joined project partners to celebrate the opening of the Port Byron Apartments. This new affordable and supportive housing residence includes 69 new affordable apartments, including 30 supportive in Port Byron. On-site services are provided by DePaul funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) administered by New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH).

DePaul President Mark Fuller kicked off the program and said, “It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a whole state to develop affordable housing.”

New tenant, Carol T. said, “When DePaul came here, everything changed. They asked me what I needed in order to live here. And everything I needed, they gave me. It felt like walking out of hell and into heaven.”

Remarks were also provided by Leonard Skrill of New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR); Julie Duncan of OMH: Tracy Conley from the Community Preservation Corporation; and Danielle Fabrizio representing New York State Assemblyman John Lemondes (126th District).

The Port Byron Apartments feature access to on-site transportation services, a pet park, walking paths, a community garden and playground and free, and free WIFI in all units. The building was also designed to comply with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and features Energy Star appliances, water conserving plumbing fixtures and an electric vehicle charging station.

Funding for the project came from HCR 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) and New York State Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program (SLIHC), Supportive Housing Opportunity Program (SHOP), Federal Housing Trust Fund and HOME Program; NYSERDA incentives; and an OMH project development grant.

The general contractor was Christa Construction and the architect was SWBR Architects.
