Breaking Ground and Comunilife Open Supportive Housing at La Central

On the morning of Oct. 29th, local and state government representatives, funding and development partners, and community members gathered in the Bronx for Breaking Ground and Comunilife’s ribbon-cutting at the transformational La Central development. The partners opened a 161-unit affordable/supportive housing residence, which includes 97 supportive units specifically for individuals who are formerly homeless and/or living with HIV/AIDS.

Services for the UnderServed and Bronx Pro Group Partner for Jerome Avenue Apartments

On the brisk morning of October 25th, state and local elected officials, funding partners, and community members joined Services for the UnderServed (S:US) and Bronx Pro Group to herald construction for Jerome Ave. Apartments. It is the first housing groundbreaking within the Jerome Avenue Neighborhood Plan, an initiative to revitalize the Jerome Avenue corridor. Out of a total 175 affordable units, 105 will also be supportive units for formerly homeless individuals and families.

The project will be a “radical transformation and improvement of this site,” according to Arlo Chase, Senior Vice President of Real Estate & Property Development at S:US, who kicked off the event’s program. He explained the site’s history: S:US took over a neighborhood eyesore – colorfully referred to as a “hot sheets motel” – and turned it into Jerome Court, housing for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, at a time when such support was still uncommon. He said  Jerome Ave. Apartments would expand on that honorable legacy.

The Network Celebrates Supportive Housing Heroes at 2019 Awards Gala

On October 23rd, the supportive housing community came out for a fabulous party, dedicated to looking back at our proudest moments over the year and honoring our greatest advocates.

Over 600 people filled the grand Capitale in New York City to reconnect and meet new colleagues in a festive environment. Attendees saw themselves on the big screen with a slideshow displaying a year’s worth of events, groundbreakings, ribbon-cuttings, and more. The evening was also for honoring key individuals with awards that recognized their enormous role in protecting vulnerable New Yorkers through supportive housing.

NYC HRA Introduces the ACCESS HRA Provider Portal

The NYC Department of Social Services – Human Resources Administration (HRA) recently announced several new features to ACCESS HRA, their web-based and mobile platform providing SNAP and TANF recipients easy access to HRA benefits. One of the latest features is the Access HRA Provider Portal, a new way for providers – with client permission – to gain access to their clients’ HRA account to improve services.

U.S. HUD Releases NOFA for Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities

On October 9th, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development released twin Notices of Funding Availability for the Section 811 Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program. Both are due on February 10th, 2020.

The Doe Fund Celebrates Ribbon-Cutting for Webster Green

On Thursday, Sept. 19th, development partners and local and state elected officials joined The Doe Fund and Robert Sanborn Development for an official ribbon-cutting for Webster Green in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx. Webster Green contains 82 units of affordable housing, including 41 supportive homes for formerly homeless individuals and families.

Breaking Ground Launches Construction for Senior Supportive Housing

On Sept. 10, construction cranes and crew were beginning the transformation of a lot in the Bronx while over 50 people gathered to celebrate what was to come. Breaking Ground gathered local elected officials, city and state representatives, funding partners, peer nonprofits, and other supporters for an official groundbreaking ceremony for Betances Residence, a 152-unit senior residence featuring 47 units for those who have experienced homelessness and 26 units specifically for current residents of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartments. Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS), another Network member, is providing the onsite social services.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: Best Practices for Responding to Federal ICE Raids

The Trump administration ramped up its attack on immigrants this summer, announcing plans to fast-track deportations with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and arrests, including in New York City. Last month, for the first time since Trump’s election, ICE tried to raid a homeless shelter. On the evening of August 6th, ICE attempted to enter Win’s East New York shelter with just a photo of the person they wanted to detain. Thankfully, Win’s security guards knew their rights. When the ICE agent failed to produce a judge-signed warrant, they were denied entry.

Let’s make sure our entire community knows our rights and protects our undocumented and immigrant clients, tenants, and neighbors. Security, providers, clients, and tenants can be prepared for ICE showing up to their shelter or residences, and to support anyone who may be living in fear of deportation. 

Win Welcomes 17 Families to New Housing on the Upper East Side

A balmy morning on August 20th found local, city, and state representatives; civic association leaders; church reverends and other supporters joining Network member Win to celebrate a new supportive housing residence on the Upper East Side. Come this fall, the residence will welcome 17 formerly homeless women and their children.

1880 Boston Road Opens to Senior Residents in the Bronx

Under a gorgeous summer sky on August 5th, new residents, supporters, and local community officials gathered with Network member Hebrew Home at Riverdale to celebrate new housing in the Bronx. An addition to an existing building, the residence meets a deep need for affordable and supportive housing by providing 167 affordable units for extremely low-income seniors, including 51 supportive units for those who have previously experienced homelessness.

Hebrew Home at Riverdale is providing the on-site social services for residents, as well as referrals to off-site medical and social services.
