Over the past months, the Network has testified at the New York City Council Committee on Environmental Protection and Committee on General Welfare Oversight as well as the New York State Assembly Standing Committee on Social Services.
On November 17, the Network’s Policy Analyst Moira McComas testified at the New York City Council Committee on Environmental Protection on electrification goals and increased investments in sustainable development. Moira testified that the Network wholeheartedly supports the City’s efforts to electrify and decarbonize affordable and supportive residences. She also emphasized that since supportive housing is nonprofit-owned and run, the Committee look for ways to assess and fund the costs of implementation. Read the full testimony here.
On December 6, the Network’s Associate Director of Advocacy and Outreach Tierra Labrada testified at the New York City Council Committee on General Welfare Oversight on the state of single adult homelessness in NYC. Tierra emphasized the need to invest in coordinated access and placement systems for housing, improve the NYC 15/15 initiative, maximize use of public sites for supportive housing, and modify the zoning resolution to increase density for affordable and supportive housing in order to reduce single adult homelessness. On December 14, the Network’s Chief Operating Officer Cynthia Stuart, testified at the New York State Assembly Standing Committee on Social Services Public Hearing on the need to renew and expand the State’ supportive housing commitment, including a preservation fund to address the needs of aging supportive housing buildings. Cynthia emphasized the need for additional units of supportive housing amidst our current homelessness crisis as well as the need for an increase to service and operating funding in supportive housing.
