On November 1st, a small group of staff, partners and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the topping off of what will be Shepherd Glenmore a supportive/affordable residence being created by HousingPlus and Spatial Equity Co.. The 123- unit building in which 74 apartments will be supportive -- aims to provide safe and secure homes that cater to the needs of female-led households who have experienced homelessness as well as severe mental illness, substance use disorders or re-entry after incarceration.

HousingPlus founder and Executive Director Rita Zimmer spoke movingly about the project: “Today we tipped our "hard hats" at the Topping off event at Shepherd Glenmore and we look forward to handing each tenant a key to their home next year. Affordable housing is essential for a safer, stronger community and we are overjoyed with this opportunity to be a good neighbor.”

The event featured brief remarks by Spatial Equity Principal Teghvir Singh Sethi who expressed his delight in being involved in the project fulfilling a life-long dream of developing deeply affordable housing.

Lastly, Teghvir’s father, Manny Sethi, head of Green Realty, the general contracting firm that will be building Shepherd Glenmore, spoke of his history trying to break into the affordable housing development world from which he had always been excluded.  He too expressed deep satisfaction at being part of this project

The building will feature two community rooms, computer lab, fitness center, a room for spiritual observance, bike room, community garden, art from local East New Yorkers and three distinct outdoor gathering spaces. Onsite services will be provided by HousingPlus and are funded through the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative under the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).

Capital financing for the project came from NYC’s Housing Preservation and Development division and 4% Low Income Housing Tax Credits through HFA.

The architect is MHG Architects and the contractor is Green Realty.
