Community Access Opens River Avenue

On the sunny first day of spring – March 19th – friends, staff, elected officials, and supporters gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of River Avenue, Community Access’ newest supportive and affordable residence in the Concourse section of the Bronx. River Avenue has 245 apartments, a mix of studios, one, two- and three-bedrooms, 148 of which are supportive for individuals and families living with mental health concerns. On-site services are funded by OMH under the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative.

CAMBA Housing Ventures and CAMBA Break Ground on Clarkson Estates

On December 5th partners, funders, staff, and friends gathered under a tent on the grounds of what will be CAMBA Housing Ventures/CAMBA’s Clarkson Estates in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, to break ground on the project which is part of the State’s Vital Brooklyn initiative. Once complete, this project will provide 328 units of permanently affordable and supportive housing with 50% of the units (164 units) set aside for formerly homeless populations, including youth aging out of foster care, formerly incarcerated individuals, formerly homeless young adults, and formerly homeless families. The other 163 units will serve low-income individuals at 30%, 40%, 50%, and 70% area median income (AMI), with one unit set aside for a live-in superintendent. Clarkson Estates will feature more than 30,000 square feet of community facility space and nearly 15,000 square feet of parking as requested through community input. Services and rental subsidy are funded by the New York State Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) contracted through the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).

Joe DeGenova Retires from CUCS

After 34 years at CUCS, Joe DeGenova has stepped down as the organization’s CEO having started at the organization as assistant Program Director in 1989. Before becoming CEO, Joe worked alongside CEO Tony Hannigan as Deputy Director for 19 years, helping to grow the organization from four programs with a budget of five million dollars to one with 24 programs and a budget of $39 million. He helped grow CUCS affiliate Janian Medical Care among a raft of accomplishments. He and Tony were bedrocks of the supportive housing community and saw its growth from a handful of projects and providers to its well-earned reputation for the most effective means of helping those most in need into homes and health.  His tenure as CEO was all too brief and he shall be deeply missed.

Unique People Services Opens 2050 Grand Concourse

More than 100 partners, electeds, staff and tenants gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of Unique People Services(UPS) 2050 Grand Concourse November 3rd. The glorious 96 apartment building will provide homes to 58 supportive individuals as well as low income families and singles. Service funding is provided by both OMH under NY/NY III and HASA through NYC 15/15.

HousingPlus Tops Off Shepherd Glenmore

On November 1st, a small group of staff, partners and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the topping off of what will be Shepherd Glenmore a supportive/affordable residence being created by HousingPlus and Spatial Equity Co.. The 123- unit building in which 74 apartments will be supportive -- aims to provide safe and secure homes that cater to the needs of female-led households who have experienced homelessness as well as severe mental illness, substance use disorders or re-entry after incarceration.

On October 24th, Homeward NYC, Type A Projects and Azimuth Development Group joined project partners to celebrate the opening of the new supportive housing residence, Homeward Central Harlem. The new residence is creating 50 LGBTQIA+ affirming supportive housing apartments for youth in Harlem. On-site services are provided by Homeward NYC funded by NYC 15/15 through New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).

Help USA and HelpDevCo Open HELP Home Simpson

On October 20th, HELP USA and HELPDevCo joined project and government partners to celebrate the opening of HELP Home Simpson. This new affordable and supportive housing residence is creating 72 new affordable apartments, including 44 supportive, for individuals and families in the Bronx. On-site services will be provided by HELP USA funded by NYC 15/15 through New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).

BronxWorks, L+M Development Partners, and Type A Projects Opens Bronx Point

On October 19th, BronxWorks, L+M Development Partners, Type A Projects, and the Hip Hop Museum joined elected officials, community leaders and developers for a ribbon cutting ceremony for Bronx Point, which will also be home to The Hip Hop Museum. This new residence is creating 542 affordable housing units, including 82 supportive in the South Bronx. On-site services are provided by BronxWorks, funded by NYC 15/15 Supportive Housing Initiative through the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).

Services for the UnderServed Hosts Virtual Topping Off Ceremony for Starhill Phase I

On September 28th, Services for the UnderServed (S:US) joined representatives of Bronx Pro Group for a virtual topping off ceremony for their supportive/affordable housing residence, Starhill Phase I. Scheduled to be open in February 2025, the residence will create 326 affordable apartments, including 200 supportive, in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx.  On-site support services will be provided by S:US funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) through New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS).

Breaking Ground Breaks Ground on Sutphin Senior Housing

On Wednesday, September 20th, Breaking Ground joined project partners and elected and government officials to break ground on affordable/supportive housing residence, Sutphin Senior Housing. When complete, Sutphin Senior Housing will create 173 new affordable apartments, including 52 supportive for seniors, in Jamaica, Queens. On-site services will be provided by Breaking Ground funded by NYC 15/15 through New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).
