NYC Departments of Homeless Services and Health and Mental Hygiene, 2005
This report from two city government agencies offers an overview of homelessness and health in New York City. The researchers analyze available data on the 55,914 single adults who used the city’s public shelter system from 2001 through 2003. Results show that 903 people who had used a single adult shelter at least once died during the studied period. Heart disease and cancer were the leading causes of death. The study also contains a detailed report on hospitalizations, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
