The Network joined forces with the Campaign 4 NY/NY Housing at the NY Society for Ethical Culture with a diverse coalition of faith leaders, legislators and a huge crowd of supporters to call for 35,000 units of supportive housing statewide on October 23rd.

New York's supportive housing community came together on October 14th for the Network's annual Awards Gala. More than 600 guests joined us at Capitale, the spectacular Stanford White-designed Beaux Arts national landmark, on a lovely Wednesday evening to celebrate the outstanding individuals of supportive housing and our amazing community.

Project Homeless Connect, the annual event that provides services to more than 600 Buffalo area homeless individuals was also the backdrop this year, for state legislators and community leaders’ calling on Governor Cuomo to fund 35,000 supportive housing units across the state to help address homelessness among the neediest New Yorkers.

On August 17th, the Network brought actor and homelessness advocate Richard Gere and director and screenwriter Oren Moverman to visit supportive housing residences in Manhattan. On the eve of releasing their hard-hitting and beautiful movie about homelessness, Time Out of Mind, the actor and director were eager to hear more detail about how supportive housing offers a bridge to a new life for chronically homeless individuals.

The 15th Annual Supportive Housing Conference kicked off the largest gathering of the supportive housing community ever with a deeply inspiring keynote address from StoryCorps’ Founder and President Dave Isay. Echoing StoryCorps’ mission and supportive housing’s moral core, Mr. Isay reminded participants that every individual matters. He also said that of the hundreds of keynotes he delivers, this one had meant the most to him personally. The morning also featured remarks from retired Brigadier General Dr. Loree Sutton, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs, and a rousing welcome from Executive Director Laura Mascuch. At the outset of the day, Network’s Chair William Traylor shared his own story about his personal history and connection to the world of supportive housing.

One hundred and fifteen members of our community gathered for the Network’s annual meeting March 12th, to review the past year, meet our new Executive Director, hear from supportive housing’s new champion, Assembly Member Andrew Hevesi and, as always network. In addition to a looped slideshow of the 22 beautiful supportive housing residences opened by our members in 2014, there was a continuous slideshow of photos from events throughout 2014.

The New York State Assembly honored outstanding supportive housing providers from around the state on March 3, 2015 as part of our second lobby day of the year, another joint effort with Homeless Services United.
Reverend Georgiette Morgan-Thomas of Goddard Riverside Community Center said, “it was an honor to represent those who cannot represent themselves yesterday; having witnessed the benefits of NY/NY I, II and III, I understand the necessity of NY/NY4, as well as the need to increase funding for services to our homeless population, and feel passionate about helping our legislators understand the need. Being acknowledged and introduced to the entire Assembly for the work that I have done in housing was empowering and encouraging.”
