On April 15th, WellLife Network joined project partners to break ground on Medford Gardens. Once complete this affordable and supportive housing residence will bring 66 affordable apartments, including 33 supportive, to Brookhaven in Suffolk County. Onsite services will be provided by WellLife Network, funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) administered by the New York State Department of Mental Health.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, WellLife Network CEO Sherry Tucker said, “Medford Gardens will represent more than just brick and mortar — it will be a symbol of hope, stability, and opportunity for community members that need it most. By expanding access to badly needed affordable and supportive housing, we are investing in the future of individuals who deserve a safe and supportive place to call home. This development underscores WellLife's commitment to ensuring that every Long Islander has the resources they need to thrive.”
New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “Creating affordable, energy-efficient, and supportive homes is the cornerstone of HCR’s work. This $40 million investment will allow 66 senior households the opportunity to live independently in a place they can afford. We thank the town of Brookhaven — a certified Pro-Housing Community — as well as WellLife and other local partners for sharing our vision on addressing the housing crisis on Long Island.”
Remarks were also given by Michael Washburn, Homeless Housing and Assistance Corporation (HHAC) Comptroller of NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA), and Lauren Velez, Director, Metro Team at CSH.
Building amenities will include electric heating and cooling, energy-efficient appliances, including laundry facilities, electric vehicle charging stations, storm drainage retention ponds, and outdoor greenspace.
Funding for this project comes from New York State Homes and Community Renewal's Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, Supportive Housing Opportunity Program, Federal Housing Trust Fund, and NYS HOME Program as well as the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.
The general contractor is BELFOR Restoration and the architect is H2M Architects + Engineers.
