As Deputy Commissioner of the Office of Supportive Housing and Specialized Services at the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA), Craig Retchless leads efforts that connect some of the City’s most vulnerable residents to safe, stable, and healthy living environments—places where individuals and families receive the services that help them build better, more independent lives.

With more than 25 years of experience spanning both government and community-based organizations, Craig Retchless has been a pivotal force in ensuring that New Yorkers facing homelessness and other challenges have access to the housing and support they need to thrive.

“Craig brings extraordinary dedication and compassion to his work, helping to lead the City’s HRA Office of Supportive Housing and Specialized Services,” said Molly Wasow Park, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Social Services. “Throughout his tenure, he has helped to strengthen the City’s supportive housing system, helping thousands of New Yorkers gain access to stable housing. Craig’s leadership ensures that our neighbors in supportive housing are treated with dignity, stability, and kindness.”

Craig is known among colleagues and providers alike as a problem-solver who values partnership and follows through on his commitments. By bringing together government agencies, contracted providers, coalitions, and advocates, he has helped strengthen the City’s supportive housing network and drive lasting progress in how services are delivered.

“Working with Craig means working with someone who puts his whole heart into this work,” shared Tori Lyon, Chief Executive Officer, Jericho Project. “He understands the realities providers face and always looks for ways to make the system work better for the people we serve. Craig listens, collaborates, and follows through.”

Craig is a true partner and champion for the thousands of New Yorkers whose lives are transformed through supportive housing. He is the very definition of an Unsung Hero.
