The Network released the following statement in response to Mayor Mamdani’s announcement that the City has secured $12 million to invest in peer-led substance use recovery services.

The Network applauds Mayor Mamdani for this critical $12 million investment in peer-led recovery services and overdose prevention efforts.

At a time when far too many New Yorkers continue to face substance use concerns, housing instability, and barriers to care — and when access to federal funding is becoming increasingly uncertain — this funding represents a meaningful commitment to meeting people where they are with compassion, dignity, and evidence-based care.

We are particularly pleased that this investment will specifically fund peer specialists at community-based organizations. The Network has long advocated for the inclusion of individuals with lived experience in the delivery of support services, recognizing that they are uniquely positioned to build trust and serve New Yorkers in need.

Over the past several years, the Network has hosted roundtables with supportive housing tenants, where participants consistently emphasized the desire for more peer specialist staff, noting that their lived experience allows them to engage individuals in services more authentically and effectively.

We look forward to continuing to work alongside City leaders and provider organizations — including Network members Fortune Society, Odyssey House, and Samaritan Daytop Village, who were all named as partners in this effort — to ensure every New Yorker has access to safe housing and supportive services. Every New Yorkers deserve safety, stability, compassionate care and this funding will go directly towards achieving this goal.
