On September 17th, the Network, in collaboration with Care for the Homeless co-led a cohort of nearly 200 advocates from across New York State as a part of the National Alliance to End Homelessness’ virtual annual Capitol Hill Day.
Over 25 meetings with members of New York’s congressional delegation and their staff were scheduled and held — representing almost the entire state.
This year’s policy priorities reflected the grave concerns over the Federal Administration’s executive efforts to gut the Continuum of Care (CoC) program and other vital components of the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget, ahead of the September 30th deadline.
Meeting discussions focused on a Senate proposal to renew CoC programs for a one-year period, as the NOFO has yet to be released. We were especially grateful to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office for her leadership on this issue and had the opportunity to express our appreciation directly to her team.
The Network and Care for the Homeless also thanked representatives for rejecting the most harmful proposals contained in the propsed federal budget — including HUD cuts of 43% and elimination of permanent supportive housing. Advocates and CoC leaders from around the state have stepped up to engage with their elected officials, ensuring their commitment to ending homelessness is heard loud and clear.
Thanks to all who participated in Capitol Hill Day. As a reminder, the Network has increased our work on Federal advocacy to meet the moment. This includes:
- A regular federal digest email to our members
- Monthly member meeting on Federal issues;
- An active sign on letter to the Senate on preserving CoC funding.
