On August 3rd, The Doe Fund joined Mayor Mamdani, project partners and elected officials to break ground on the Casanova Residence. Once complete, this new affordable and supportive residence will bring 96 apartments, including 58 supportive apartments to the Hunts Point neighborhood in the Bronx. On-site support services are provided by the Doe Fund funded by NYC 15/15 administered through New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
At the groundbreaking The Doe Fund’s President & CEO, Jennifer Mitchell said “It’s overwhelming to be here in this moment. Having worked in the Hunts Point community since 2016, I have seen firsthand the resilience, the determination, and the pride that defined this community. And today's groundbreaking, and the future Casanova residences, will build on that strength, helping to ensure that Hunt's Point remains a place where people, families, and local businesses can thrive.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also spoke, saying “Raymond Santana of the exonerated five, wrote a poem entitled "Time in 1991". In it he said, 'I just want to go home'. Those words carried a meaning that went far beyond Spofford's walls. The people of Hunt's Point had long suffered from an intentional city government disinvestment that made it difficult to go home. It was neglected, manifested in broken street lamps, and windows bordered with plywood. And sidewalks covered in rubble, and a landscape littered with buildings gutted from fires that some landlords had set to collect the insurance bail. But the people of this neighborhood refuse to let destruction become their norm. In the 35 years since Raymond Santana wrote those words, the people of Hunt's Point have rebuilt. The livable, walkable streets where we stand today are proof of residents coming together to organize, to advocate, to demand something better.”
