Network Statement in Support of Shams DaBaron image

03.24.2021

The Supportive Housing Network of New York is appalled at the latest installment of the ugly NIMBY battle that has been playing out at the Lucerne Hotel on the Upper West Side since July, when Project Renewal moved shelter residents to the empty hotel to protect them from COVID.

This most recent travesty, by which Randy Mastro hired private investigators to harass and intimidate Shams DaBaron – known as Da Homeless Hero -- in his new Harlem apartment is truly shameful. We are deeply grateful to Shams for sharing his story: he – with the support of the Open Hearts Initiative -- has powerfully elevated and humanized the City’s homelessness crisis in just a few short months. We are also  thrilled that Shams finally has what all New Yorkers experiencing homelessness deserve -- a place to call home.
