On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Network was honored to join The Fortune Society and NYC Health + Hospitals for Mayor Zohran Mamdani's announcement restarting Just Home.

Just Home will create 83 units of permanent affordable and supportive housing for individuals who were formerly incarcerated and are experiencing complex medical needs, located on the Jacobi campus of NYC Health + Hospitals.

During the press conference Mayor Mamdani said: "Today we stand together at a future site of Just Home. This is a testament to the new city we are building together—one that uplifts those who struggle and does not shy away from the challenges we face.”

President & CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals Mitchell Katz shared: “The most important prescription for unhoused patients is supportive housing. Housing changes the arc of someone’s life, and that’s why we are so glad to be here.”

Fortune Society Tenant Advocate and our Neighbor of the Year Honoree, Helen Taylor said: “Supportive housing saved my life. It’s not just a place to live—it’s a tremendous amount of support that acknowledges I am part of the community. My story should not be unique. Everyone should have access to supportive housing and the life they want and deserve: a life of health, safety, and dignity.”

President & CEO of The Fortune Society Stanley Richards stated: “This model is rooted in what The Fortune Society has provided for decades. When people have stable housing and robust support, they are far more likely to become positive, contributing neighbors. The people who will live here are among the city’s most vulnerable, have paid their debt to society, and deserve the dignity of recovery and rebuilding their lives in a safe home—not a jail cell.”

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams added: “For far too long, this project was stalled by fear-based opposition that treated people as problems instead of neighbors. Restarting Just Home is a statement that our city chooses humanity over exclusion. Supportive housing works—we have the data to prove it. It keeps people housed, improves health outcomes, and makes communities safer. It is far more effective and compassionate than cycling people through shelters, hospitals, and jails.”

We congratulate The Fortune Society, NYC Health + Hospitals, and the many advocates whose persistence made this day possible. We also thank Mayor Mamdani for his continued commitment to advancing supportive housing across New York City.
