On September 10th, Jericho Project joined Settlement Housing Fund to celebrate the groundbreaking of Coney Landing. Once complete, this new residence will create 178 new affordable apartments – including 106 supportive units, LGBTQ+ affirming for young adults – in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Settlement Housing Fund is the project developer and owner, and Jericho Project will provide on-site services funded by NYC 15/15 administered through New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).
At the groundbreaking, project partners made remarks:
Jericho Project’s Chief Executive Officer Tori Lyon said, "All New Yorkers deserve compassion as they rebuild their lives with the dignity of housing; and Jericho is proud to contribute our on-site services to support the individuals and families, including LGBTQ+ young adults, who will call Coney Landing their home.”
Settlement Housing Fund President Judy Herbstman, “Settlement Housing Fund is thrilled to break ground in Coney Island on our next new affordable construction project and our first supportive housing development. We are especially pleased to provide essential housing with services to some of the community’s most vulnerable neighbors.”
NYC Housing Preservation and Development (NYC HPD) Acting Commissioner Tigani said, “Our mission is as clear as it is urgent: to make sure that every New Yorker has a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Delivering more affordable housing in Coney Island is an opportunity to invest in a community with deep roots, to support an area with enduring cultural significance, and to open up thousands of new homes for families across the five boroughs.”
First Executive Vice President of NYC Housing Development Corporation (HD) Ruth Moreira said, “The start of construction at Coney Landing represents a vital step in bringing 178 affordable homes, including more than 100 supportive units, to Coney Island. This development reflects our shared commitment to pairing affordable housing with the services residents need to thrive, while also advancing sustainable and resilient design.”
Remarks were also provided by: Senior Director of Community Finance at Capital One, Loretta Duffy and Deputy Borough President, Kim Council.
Building amenities include a terrace, community room and gym. The building is also designed to meet the highest standards of sustainability, including Passive House certification and geothermal energy systems.
