On May 13th, Jericho Project, HELP USA and the Hudson Companies, joined project partners and supporters to celebrate the opening of a new affordable, supportive and transitional housing residence, Logan Fountain. This new building is creating 173 new affordable apartments, including 105 supportive, in Brooklyn's Cypress Hills neighborhood. Additionally, it will provide 169 units of transitional housing run by HELP USA. Jericho Project will provide the on-site services to supportive housing tenants funded by NYC 15/15 administered by NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH).
At the opening Tori Lyon, CEO, Jericho Project said, “Being able to hand keys to a tenant for their own apartment is life changing. It’s not just about providing beautiful housing, we also provide services that are person-centered. We know tenants are experts in their own lives and we help people be the best they can for themselves.”
Daniel Girard, Director of the Supportive Housing Loan Program (SHLP), NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (NYC HPD), said, “This site was once a vacant gas station and now we’re here today. It took a lot of vision trust and collaboration. There are 173 permanent affordable apartments, including 105 supportive with wrap around services provided by Jericho Project, to provide services with dignity. It’s what works.”
Council Member Sandy Nurse said, “Thank you everyone who was involved and this is a beautiful building. It looks great, the playground looks amazing and it’s situated with a lot of support and great things going on around here: high schools, Cypress Hills commons with free programming and classes, community college, a pantry, etc. Welcome to the community.”
New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner RuthAnne Visnauskas said, “HCR’s investment in affordable housing will bring benefits to Brooklyn’s Cypress Hills community for generations to come. With affordable apartments, family-friendly amenities, and energy-efficient features, Logan Fountain demonstrates the potential housing can have on the lives of New Yorkers and the future of our neighborhoods.”
New York City Department of Homeless Services Administrator Joslyn Carter said, “How do we raise the bar and come into spaces that say 'this is for you.' I want to make sure we create spaces that when you come to I take you come place that has hope - this has supportive housing and that gives families coming into shelter hope. This warms my heart.”
Baseera Khan, artist of project murals, said, “I grew up with insecure housing and the most important thing we can do is provide a safe space for children to put their heads down and sleep and dream. The way for the future is dreaming and having safety to dream and that’s what this community has done. We will cultivate the next musicians and politicians and they will save the world.”
Amenities include ground-floor retail, play areas, fitness space, and a courtyard. Additionally, it includes sustainability features such as rooftop solar panels for on-site energy generation and ENERGY STAR (r) appliances.
Financing for the project comes from New York City HPD SHLP Program, NYS Housing Finance Agency’s equity from LIHTC 4% and incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
The general contractor is Broadway Builders and the architect is MHG.
