On July 30th, HousingPlus and Spatial Equity joined project partners to celebrate the opening of Shepherd Glenmore. This new residence brings 123 affordable apartments, including 74 supportive apartments for those who have experience or are at risk of homelessness to Cypress Hills, Brooklyn. On-site services are provided by Housing Plus, funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) and administered by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.
Spatial Equity Principal Teghvir Sethi kicked off the program remarking, “Shepherd Glenmore represents transformation: a derelict junkyard reimagined into LEED Gold housing for seniors, families, and individuals to build new lives in rent stabilized, state-of-the-art homes. Thank you to those who recognize that supportive housing is freedom.”
HousingPlus CEO Karen Ford said, “Permanent supportive housing ensures that families with significant barriers are able to obtain and maintain safety and stability. There is a saying that ‘you can always tell the quality of the city by how we treat our most vulnerable.’ That is one of the foundational pillars of why I do this work and show up every day. We know that housing is the cornerstone of family. Housing is not an option; it is a right. It is the cornerstone of every thriving community.”
NYC Housing Preservation & Development Acting Commissioner Ahmed Tigani said “If we could build all of our housing with the same tools and wraparound services and resources that we have in supportive housing that would be a major win for the City of New York.”
Resident at Shepherd Glenmore, Ms. Cathy C. said, “Shepherd Glenmore is a blessing. It’s a beautiful building, and with all the staff that work here, they help and they do a lot of good for people. It’s an amazing thing that we can afford housing.”
NYC Council Member Sandy Nurse expressed pride in the project and said, “Projects like this are so important. Shepherd Glenmore is meeting the deep need for affordable and supportive housing being felt throughout our city. Justice-impacted families, seniors, and New Yorkers with mental health needs deserve to live in homes with dignity and the resources to thrive.”
Resident at Shepherd Glenmore Luz B. said, “I was at rock bottom, I was pregnant and incarcerated. I was fortunate to be released before my child was born. I have a home to bring my child to. My life made a turn for the best. This community is the best. We really need more support, especially when you’re justice-impacted like me.”
Rita Zimmer, Founder of HousingPlus remarked, “I have always said that the solution to so many of the interconnected issues facing New Yorkers is simply this: more housing. This building is an important step, and we must keep going.”
Building amenities include a fitness center, community garden, computer room, bike room, and a yoga & meditation studio.
Funding for this project comes from New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, subsidies from New York State Homes and Community Renewal, and the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and an investment and construction loan from Wells Fargo.
The general contractor is Green Realty, LLC and the architect is MHG Architects.
