On March 31st, Community Access joined project and community partners to celebrate the groundbreaking of River Avenue II Apartments. Once complete, this new residence will bring 292 affordable apartments, including 173 supportive apartments for individuals with mental illness, formerly homeless individuals and veterans with disabilities. 15 units are for individuals with mobility needs and six units are for individuals with sensory disabilities. On-site services are provided by Community Access, funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) and NYC 15/15 administered by the Office of Temporary Disability Assistance (OTDA) and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH).
Community Access CEO Cal Hedigan, kicked off the program and said, “Community Access is excited to mark the groundbreaking of 1185 River Avenue. As our second development on this block, we are proud to play a significant part in the transformation of the River Avenue corridor. Housing is a human right, and access to a stable, affordable home can be life-changing—providing the foundation for moving forward with dignity, and the opportunity to heal and grow.”
Remarks were also provided by: New York State Homes and Community Renewal Senior Vice President for Multifamily Finance and Development Alexa Sewell, New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Assistant Director (HHAP) Michael Washburn and Bank of America Senior Vice President Kwame Ndzibah.
Building amenities include an urban farm on the roof, a children’s play area, outdoor exercise equipment, a meditation walking path and a commercial space in the cellar to be occupied by a grocery store providing fresh food access to residents.
Financing for this project comes from Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and subsidy from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability (OTDA) Assistance Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.
The general contractor is Mega Contracting Group and the architect is Edelman Sultan Knox Wood Architects (ESKW).
