1) What is Weatherization?
Weatherization is the performance of repairs and improvements to buildings to make them more comfortable, increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs.

2) Why Now?
The “Green” building movement has reached all levels of development and operations. Sustainable activities are now easier to accomplish through available resources and new materials. To support these initiatives there has been an influx of Federal funds, particularly through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), that encourages and funds for energy efficient efforts.
Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) ARRA Funding: 2009-2011
$ 5,000,000,000 In National funding from U.S. Department of Energy
$ 394,686,513 Allocated to New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal
$ 157,000,000 Downstate allocation(New York City, Rockland, Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk)
$ 9,000,000 AEA/The Network contract targeting downstate supportive housing
3) Weatherization Timeline & Process
One year down, One year left Weatherize NOW!
The weatherization process can take anywhere from six months to nine months or more, from application to construction completion. If your organization wants to take advantage of the current WAP funds, you should complete a weatherization application as soon as possible. Although weatherization has been funded by Congress for over 30 years, the scale of funding and the amount of buildings to be weatherized this year is unique.
4) How to get started:
Statewide: Every building in the state has an identified weatherization provider who is contracted by New York State DHCR and authorized to weatherize buildings locally. Find the local WAP provider for your buildings and contact them now.
Downstate: The Supportive Housing Network of New York, in partnership with the local non-profit, highly accredited WAP provider, The Association for Energy Affordability (AEA), is part of a temporary subgrantee contract to weatherize 1,250 units of supportive housing in NYC, Rockland, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk by June 2011
5) Supportive Housing Provider Member Testimonials
“It’s a worthwhile program to participate in, especially with the older supportive housing stock, to be able to upgrade with a minimal investment…So far the experience has been great. SHNNY understands the purpose we serve and the services we provide… and AEA has years of experience doing this in the city.” Ernesto Vigoreaux, Director of Housing Development for Comunilife
“It cuts down the bills, bottom line. Energy efficiency is all about saving money, saving the environment, and having a better maintained system,” says Richard Pimentel from Common Ground.
