The 2011-2012 Managing Lean and Green (MLG) workshop series was another collaborative success. Below, you'll find summaries of each workshop. Better Building Performance through Greener Management Practices
The preservation and maintenance of buildings is critical to maximizing their efficiency. What are some approaches that affordable housing owners and managers can take to improve the operations of their buildings and the quality of life for their tenants? This session looked at green building management strategies and how an integrated, agency-wide approach can increase energy and water efficiency, improve health benefits and save money. Presenters illustrated the benefits of looking closely at building performance and then described policies that can and should be implemented to improve it.

Mobilize Residents: Get More Green from Your Building
This tenant education session built upon last year’s workshop, “Engaging Tenants and Staff in Greening your Building.” Four case studies from 2010-2011 were presented by affordable and supportive housing providers highlighting different techniques and processes for engaging and educating tenants. Environmental Psychologist Mirele Goldsmith moderated and presented evidence from current theory and practices on how to change attitudes and behavior related to environmental activities.

Implementing Integrated Pest Management in Affordable Housing
What is the safest way to keep vermin out of your building? Can it be done without harmful chemicals?  This workshop brought together leaders in the design and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.   IPM is a series of approaches that manage pests economically with the least possible hazard to residents, property and the environment.

Implementing Smoke-Free Building Policies in Affordable Housing
How can affordable housing developers and managers integrate smoke-free policies into their developments?  This workshop brought together leaders in the design and implementation of smoke-free building policies that increase the awareness of the health impacts of secondhand smoke, protect residents' health and reduce property damage.
